.Cinequest Hits a Milestone at 20

rsz_cqff20_creativeTwenty is a sexy age—even for a film festival. Fortunately for San Jose, Cinequest has never looked better—both onscreen and off. Actually, the revered celluloid soiree, which hits its 20-year marker this week, has managed to produce one of the most impressive outings in the Bay Area this season. More than 200 film screenings roll out, among them about 76 U.S. and World and premieres from 45 countries. The fest also honors “Maverick” filmmakers and innovators. Speaking of, mark your calendar and clear you Sixth Chakra: Deepak Chopra—yes, the Deepak—is being honored with a “Life of a Maverick Award” at 7pm Tuesday, March 2 at San Jose’s California Theatre. Interesting to note is that Chopra has penned the script for “The Sadhu,” which is under development—the film is based on the comic book series about a British soldier who discovers he is reincarnated. (Expect “life messages.”) Interesting to note, too, is the film dubbed “The 36,” which is based on Deepak’s own novel. More news on that later … Other recipients of the “Life of a Marverick Award include John Schlesinger, Kevin Spacey, John Waters, Rod Steiger, Sir Ben Kingsley, William H. Macy, Sir Ian McKellen, Spike Lee, Alec Baldwin and others.

But back to the fest.

rsz_cq20goodheart1_500x300Opening night (Tuesday, Feb. 23) goodies revolve around the U.S. Premiere of  “The Good Heart” at 7pm at the California Theatre. The film stars Brian Cox (“The Bourne Identity,” “Troy,” “Match Point’),  a quirky older gent who befriends a young homeless man (Paul Dano, “Little Miss Sunshine”). There’s good buzz on the film thus far.

There’s more. (There’s always more.) But take note of Benjamin Bratt’s honor with a Marverick Spirit Award on March 4 at the California Theatre. Bratt is on board this year’s fest with the film in “The Messenger.” Closing night (March 6) features the riveting film “Mother.” In between, expect a bevy of parties and more screenings than, perhaps, any other year.

Stay tuned for more updates and behind-the-scenes coverage as Cinequest gets under way. See you at the movies …
