Here Comes the Green Hornet!

blog_xrayhornetWell, I guess I should be clear about this: My exposure to the Green Hornet is extremely limited at best. I never read any of the comic books or caught any episodes of the television show from the 60’s. In fact, the only real memory I have of the character is from his occasional appearances on the old Adam West Batman series and even those only stood out because Kato was a total badass. Seriously, what’s cooler than seeing Batman fight alongside Bruce Lee?

So with that in mind, this weekend’s big screen release has me somewhat torn. One on hand, there’s something sort of mysteriously appealing about the Green Hornet that I can’t quite put my finger on. But on the other I’m kind of burned out on Seth Rogen in general. The guy’s career at this point just feels completely oversaturated. Sure, all of the trailers I’ve seen come across as nothing if not some good old fashioned, light hearted fun. But I can’t help but feel like this movie has more than a small chance to fall flat on its face.

I think the fact that Michel Gondry is the director is what has me curious more than anything. Who wouldn’t be at the thought of the visionary filmmaker responsible for such inventive flicks as Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and The Science of Sleep tackling the super hero genre? There’s also the added attraction of Christoph Waltz cast as the film’s bad guy. Waltz, who was nothing short of pure genius as Nazi Col. Hans Landa in last year’s Inglourious Basterds has established himself as an actor who demands attention and I’m ready to watch that guy in pretty much anything. Ugh. All right, I’ve talked myself into going to see it.

Here’s hoping for a Batman cameo.
