After an eight-month hiatus, The Harmony Honeys, a local old-time bluegrass band, are back in action. And vocalist Chelsea Curtin couldn’t be more excited. “It’s been a little while since we played out and about,” she says. “But we’re happy to be out on the scene again.” During their time off, Curtin moved to San Francisco for a new job, and bandmate Becky Hendricks (vocals, fiddle, guitar) spent some time playing with other bands. But fate has brought The Harmony Honeys back together, and their upcoming show at The Crepe Place will be a special one.
“We’ll be playing some songs for the first time publicly, a couple of originals I wrote, so that’s exciting for us,” Curtin says. The band—which sometimes performs as a quartet, but often is a duo—formed in 2008, and while they do not have any albums available right now, they’ve uploaded a few recordings to Facebook. “Skillet Good and Greasy” is a lively bluegrass send-up of Uncle Dave Macon’s “Keep My Skillet Good and Greasy,” and a stirring rendition of Doc & Merle Watson’s “Red Rocking Chair” showcases the band’s ability to tackle more serious material. “We started out pretty much just singing bluegrass and old-time songs, and have continued to grow our own repertoire at the same time,” explains Curtin. She says that audience members can look forward to a totally unique set on March 6. “For our upcoming show, it’s just Becky and myself, and that looks like a lot of banjo and fiddles and vocal harmonies,” Curtin says. “It’s pretty upbeat. We throw in some surprises too. I might be doing some clogging. We like to mix and match different things and styles and songs and make it eclectic.”
