.Green Lantern’s Plight

blog_xrayIt’s a sad, sad time in the life of a huge DC nerd like myself when I’m more excited about movies based on Marvel characters than the Green Lantern flick which is opening this weekend. But the reason is simple: I really can’t stand the casting. Now, Chris Evans as Captain America = me standing in line for a ticket. Michael Fassbender as Magneto = me seriously considering starting an online petition to get MGM to ditch Daniel Craig and cast the dude as the next James Bond. But Ryan Reynolds as the Green Lantern? Ugh. No thanks.

It’s not that I’m some huge Green Lantern fanboy and am ready to start picketing outside of theaters or anything. It’s just that I’ve always found the general concept to be pretty compelling and the potential for an epic sci-fi movie series is massive. I love the idea that the universe is split up into thousands of sectors with super powered aliens acting as basically space cops, protecting their respective territories – That’s just COOL. But every bit of footage I’ve caught so far has been a serious let down, with Ryan Reynold’s distractingly vacant presence leading the charge. I’ve nearly fallen asleep during trailers for this movie because of how flat out pedestrian it looks.

*Sigh*

I have no doubt that I’ll catch this movie somewhere down the line, be it on DVD or better yet streaming from netflix. The fact that DC’s main man Geoff Johns had some creative involvement makes it impossible for me to write it off completely. I just can’t bring myself to part with ten bucks for what I’m sure is going to be a major disappointment. I’d rather spend the afternoon re-reading Green Lantern:Rebirth or better yet, go see Super 8 again.
