Booked for the Holidays

By Christina Waters

Intimate and cozy, Mockingbird Books in Aptos Village continues its quest for the well-filled bookshelf. And--this will probably not come as a surprise--there are lots of wonderful additions to the rare and used inventory, just in time (as they say) for the holidays. And chances are, there's at least one bookworm on your shopping list.

Mockingbird recently acquired an extensive collection of more than 300 titles of art books representing non-Western cultures. This stash of used, rare and out-of-print volumes and picture books is one of the largest in Northern California.

Of course, there are books on every conceivable subject here. Buying for someone who owns a cat? Plays golf? Collects dolls? You get the idea.

A volume of poetry is as sensuous, in the right hands, as a silk negligee. The best idea is to spend an hour at Mockingbird Books just cruising the aisles. The absolutely right thing will appear. Did I mention books on tape? Who doesn't love to be read to at home or, for a real guilt-free pleasure, while driving?

And, yes, you'll find new calendars, the de rigueur holiday gift in the Waters household since the dawn of time. Should your brain suddenly stop working, just pick up a gift certificate and let the intended do her own shopping this wonderful retreat.

Mockingbird Books, 8045 Soquel Dr., Aptos, is open Mon.--Thu. and Sat., 10am--6pm, Fri., 10am--9pm, and Sun., 10am--5pm (689-9113).
