Faith As We See It

Photographs and interviews
By Robert Scheer

When I began this project a few months ago, I was apprehensive. After all, I had officially been inside a church six times: four weddings, one funeral and a Catholic Mass a few years ago in Baja.

I was surprised at how readily my subjects invited me into their lives, and at how much they appreciated a journalist wanting to tell their story. In some cases the generosity was overwhelming. I was invited to wear a yarmulke, take communion and wake up for a 4am meditation session.

I decided who I wanted to photograph by poking through phone books and talking with my religious friends. Some images came easily. Others took a lot of thinking and repeated visits.

I quickly found out the concept of faith is too vast a story to capture in a few pages. It is my hope that these images will bring you into a new realm of the spirit.

Begin the photo essay.
