Faith As We See It

Gary McMillin

"Faith is something that is ever-changing to me. In reaching out to the community during this epidemic of HIV, I'm finding the response is very positive and supportive. It has strengthened my belief and my faith that humankind will be there for one another, that it is our purpose as Christians and as members of the community. When HIV was still a very scary thing for a lot of the community, my church stood up and said we still want to be there in support.

"Faith has been the tool that has given me strength to get up in the morning, to go on through the loss of friends, through the loss of my lover. I've been privileged to be a bridge of communication from the HIV community to this community of faith. Not only have I grown spiritually, but I've gained strength, and that has added tremendously to my survival time living with this disease. You can take as many pills as you want, but unless you believe they're going to work, that something's going to change that for you, I don't believe they do."

---Gary McMillin, a Deacon at Trinity Presbyterian Church, at his home near Corralitos.
