Curtis Cartier shares his favorite viral music videos.
By Curtis Cartier
There was a time when MTV and VH1 held the keys to the world's supply of music videos. Today any goofball with a webcam can make film history with a good idea and a YouTube membership. So without further ado, here are Mu_Z's top five viral music videos.
Eric Wareheim, 'Parisian Goldfish' by Flying Lotus
Eric Wareheim, the heftier half of Cartoon Network's brilliantly awkward late-night laugh riot Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job, produced this video, which has now been banned by several sites, including YouTube. The vid is set to the song "Parisian Goldfish" by L.A.-beat genius Flying Lotus and features a full-on porno scene with the couple's naughty bits changed into animated rainbow caves and shooting rockets. You haven't laughed this hard at two people having sex since fifth grade health class.
will.i.am, 'Yes We Can' by Barack Obama
This ace video by will.i.am of Black Eyed Peas captured Barack Obama's message of change and undoubtedly helped him capture the White House. Turning then-candidate Obama's New Hampshire primary speech into a reggae-tinged tearjerker of a song with cameos by superstars John Legend, Scarlett Johansson, Herbie Hancock and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, this video marks the first (but not the last) time I got misty watching our president speak.
James Houston, 'Nude' by Radiohead
Last year Radiohead held a remix contest for their song "Nude" off the masterful In Rainbows album. With the original set in the tricky 3/4 waltz time, remixers were forced to get creative. None was quite as creative, however, as James Houston. The Glasgow art student uses an old dot matrix printer, an HP scanner and a set of hard drive speakers to whine out the song in an analog cacophony of clicks, buzzes, rattles and hisses.
Matthew Cullen, 'Pork and Beans' by Weezer
This video was made after Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo exited a meeting with Geffen Records in which he was supposedly told to make music that was more "commercial." Jaded and vengeful, Cuomo and Co., along Matthew Cullen of the underground Motion Theory studio, concocted this three-minute DIY tribute to viral videos and the YouTube phenomenon. Set to Weezer's rock anthem "Pork and Beans" and featuring Internet celebrities like Gary Brolsma the "Numa Numa" guy and gay vlog king Chris Crocker, the video is a look back at all the brain cell-slaughtering homemade entertainment hatched by America's best and brightest.
Keith Schofield, 'Toe Jam' by the BPA, featuring David Byrne & Dizzee Rascal
There's nothing like watching a gang of hot young girls bounce around the room with no clothes on. In this viral masterpiece set to the song "Toe Jam" by David Byrne of the Talking Heads and Dizzee Rascal, you get just that. And while you may be saddened to learn that the hotties in question have their goodies censored with old-fashioned black bars, once you see the way director Keith Schofield arranged the blackouts into moving Pong games, winking smiley faces and beating hearts, you'll be only mildly upset that you can't see underneath.
