.These Dark Days

blog_xrayGod bless Geoff Johns. Seriously. I can’t stress enough how much I love the guy. The DC scribe responsible for having penned some of the most critically and commercially successful series for the company this past decade is at it again with yet another major crossover. This time with Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps facing off against a threat so massive and dangerous that the potential to consume the entire DC universe is an all too real possibility.

Blackest Night is as bleak as the title suggests. While the seed for the story dates way back to a mid-eighties Alan Moore short within the pages of “Tales of the Green Lantern Corps” in which a warning is made of the approaching “War of Light” (an epic battle that would signal the final days for the DC universe) it wasn’t until recently that steps were made to realize and expand on the idea. Essentially, in addition to the green lanterns there are multiple colored corps throughout the galaxy all fueled by various emotions and impulses leading to some pretty interesting conflicts.

I really don’t want to give away too much here, but the catalyst of the series is the black lantern corps, the most terrifying of all. One whose ring brings the dead back to life with not only the power of a lantern but also the abilities of it’s host.

Comparisons to Marvel’s Zombies series are of course, inevitable but completely unfair as this is not some out of continuity spin-off. The events in this book are very real with some potentially serious consequences for a long time to come. With a completely believable and terrifying atmosphere bleeding through every panel of every page, I honestly don’t think I’ve felt this genuinely creeped out by a comic since From Hell.

We’re not even halfway through the book and all I can say is that my hands sweat with anticipation of each issue. With Ivan Reis’ gorgeous pencils backing up Johns signature sharp, snappy plotting and dialogue, this tale is definitely working for and earning it’s place amongst the great comic stories ever written.”Blackest Night” is truly massive in scale spanning not only the main seven issue series but also a number of other mini’s featuring some of DC’s more major characters (Batman, Superman).
