[whitespace] Musical Chairs

By Karen Reardanz

AS IF LESSER-KNOWN local bands don't have enough trouble finding a hospitable venue to play--things are about to get tougher. Costa Brava, a spot that's played host to local world-beat and samba bands on weekends for the past few years, will be taking a breather for an undetermined amount of time, according to the restaurant's music-booking man, Ken Mowry.

Mowry also noted a change in days for Mobo Sushi's live music. The sushi palace will now play host to live tunes on Tuesday through Thursday instead of the weekends.

Rosie McCann's is another Pacific Avenue venue entangled in a sticky mess of bureaucratic red tape. Its battle with entertainment licenses began at the end of last year, and Brad Manosevitz, the pub's booking agent, explains that there are two issues at hand: Can Rosie's host the amplified live music and dancing that it's been doing until now, and will it be possible for them to host music acts more than just on the weekend?

Those questions will be answered on March 28 (7:30pm) at a public hearing at the City Council Chambers, 809 Center St., SC. The Rosie McCann's folk encourage everyone who has an interest in supporting live music to attend. As Manosevitz said, "Local live music venues are dwindling. We have an incredibly talented community, but there are just so few places to play."
