Season's Greeting By Karen Reardanz A WAY TO TELL that summertime is just around the corner? Finding out the schedules for the Cabrillo Music Festival and Shakespeare Santa Cruz. The CabMuFest folks--once again led by music director Marin Alsop--held a press conference last Monday to announce their upcoming performances in August. On the top of the bill is a fully staged production of Leonard Bernstein's Mass, a piece originally composed for the Kennedy Center in 1971 and rarely performed since. Featuring costumes, chorus and choreography by Gary Masters (of San Jose's Jose Limón Company), Mass will mark a departure from the CabMuFest norm--it will be performed three times during the festival's opening weekend, Aug. 6 and 7. Also on the bill are Gregory Smith's Zoo Story (the annual Family Concert); Giants in Concert (with pieces by Steve Reich, Aaron Copland, John Adams and Christopher Rouse) on Aug. 8; the Music in the Mountains concert on Aug. 13; and Some Enchanted Evening, comprised of works by Michael Torke (whose Jasper makes its West Coast premiere), Aaron Copland, Michael Daugherty and Howard Hanson on Aug. 14. The festival's annual grande dame, the Mission San Juan Bautista concert, turns the spotlight on two Scottish composers, Sally Beamish and James MacMillan (whose Confessions of Isobel Gowdie also makes its West Coast premiere), as well as Richard Danielpour and Aaron Jay Kernis--another premiere--on Aug. 15. Interspersed between the concerts, of course, will be the annual art and wine festival, held outside of the SC Civic on Aug. 7 and 8. For a complete schedule, ticket info and more, call 426-6966. On the Shakespeare Santa Cruz front, the bard lovers this year will tackle Romeo and Juliet, Two Gentlemen of Verona and George Bernard Shaw's Arms and the Man. Happy Birthday The fabulous folks at the Nickelodeon are celebrating their 30th year bringing indie and art films to Santa Cruz, and in typical fashion, they're sharing the birthday joy with their audience. On April 10, the Nick kicks off an all-night movie marathon. The flicks start at 11pm with Ghostbusters and wind down on April 11 at 3:45pm with Dr. Strangelove. In between, they'll show El Mariachi, The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T, Five Easy Pieces and more. Five dollars gets you into one or all of the films. Plus, there'll be cake, movie trivia, free coffee and general celebratory hoopla. Check out Film Santa Cruz for more info. Coming Up Just added to the Palookaville lineup--Rufus Wainwright. The media darling plays Santa Cruz on April 18.
