Art & About
By Karen Reardanz
THE SUMMER MUSIC festival is upon us, and booking guru Tom Miller recently let me in on some of the acts he has booked for the Solstice Santa Cruz Music Festival and the Summer and Fall Fat Fry concerts at Aptos Village Park. On June 19, the Solstice Festival welcomes Little Feat, Roger McGuinn, Lydia Pense & Coldblood and Tempest, while June 20 sees Jerry Jeff Walker, David Lindley & Wally Ingram and Maria Muldaur taking the stage.
The annual Fat Fry festivities begin July 24 with performances by Robert Earl Keen, Laura Love, Todd Snider and Kelly Jo Phelps and continue July 25 with Taj Mahal & the Phantom Blues Band, Mumbo Gumbo and the Young Dubliners. The Fall Fat Fry features the Doobie Brothers, Fred Eaglesmith and Ray Wylie Hubbard on the weekend of September 25-26.
For ticket info, call 425-0212, and keep in mind that acts are still being added.
Name Game
The all-female swing band Full Swing ran into a little legal snafu recently when its members discovered that they shared their band name with a Monterey group. The ladies are now enlisting the help of the masses in their name game. Mail in suggestions to Full Swing, 84 Blackburn St., Santa Cruz, CA 95060 or call Gail Cruse at 454-9548 with suggestions for a sparkling new nom.
The winner, who will be announced on May 29 at Peachwood's at Pasatiempo, will receive a $30 gift certificate to the restaurant, and, most importantly, the undying appreciation of the Full Swing ladies.
Upcoming
Sad news for those out there who were wondering if indeed the rain still falls in Africa: Toto has canceled its May 11 show at the Catalyst.
On the literary front, the woman who brought out the wanderlust in millions with her travel memoir Under the Tuscan Sun, Frances Mayes, has returned with another installment of her Italian love affair. She comes to the Capitola Book Cafe on May 27 to read from Bella Tuscany.
Finally, former U.S. surgeon general and masturbation proponent Jocelyn Elders will speak on sexual responsibility at UCSC on Thursday.
