[whitespace] Event Recognizes Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

By Mike Conner

COMING UP on Sept. 25, Jacob's Heart Children's Cancer Association will host the fourth annual Kidrageous Carnival, an event dedicated to the celebration of life for children battling cancer. Kidrageous started as an innovative way to gather signatures for a state proclamation of September as Childhood Cancer Awareness month. In 1999, Gray Davis issued the proclamation, and although Jacob's Heart has achieved its original goal, it continues to expand the event in an effort to raise awareness and provide children suffering from cancer with a fun-filled day of activities and events of all kinds.

"Each booth is in honor or memory of one of our kids and something that they like or loved," says Jacob's Heart's executive director Sally Green. "I'm hoping in the next few years that childhood cancer awareness will be recognized in the way that breast cancer is. Part of Kidrageous, for us, is getting the information out there."

Celebrity MCs Lex Van Den Berghe and KPIG's Dallas Ana Phares will preside over the day's events, which include performances by the Smokin' Bananas band, Kinda Big and Ginnie Mitchell, as well as a magic show from Mickey Magic and activities like rock climbing, bounce houses, and dunk tanks and face-painting. There will also be various bilingual activities, including Mexican-style dancing and Spanish hip-hop.

Kidrageous runs noon-5pm at San Lorenzo Park on Sunday, Sept. 29.
