Faith As We See It

Don Williams & son

"I think I'm blessed in the fact that my father-in-law is a Baptist minister--has been for the past 40 years--and has had a strong impact on my spiritual life. The family loves going to our church; It offers a lot for anyone. It's a family-oriented church with some wonderful kids' programs; they meet Fridays. Quite often they have projects during the week, such as plays being done regularly. All these things add to the faith, strengthen my kids, and that's important to me. I'm thankful for my wife, who's really been a major inspiration in my life. It takes someone to bring you into the fold of Christianity. I'd have to say that she was my direct link. I do believe that I have a charge from the scriptures where I need to walk a walk as worthy in God's eye, and raise the children in a way that God would be pleased. For they don't belong to me ... they belong to Him. If I can to that much in life--at least try to show them a rightful walk, a caring and loving walk towards other people, regardless of who they are--I know I've done my job."

--Don Williams, a Deacon at Progressive Missionary Baptist and the director of the African-American theater troupe at UCSC, with 10-month-old Don Williams Jr. at his family's recent housewarming.
