If you’re lusting after some seductive and downright sexy wine for Valentine’s weekend, then look no further than Poetic Cellars. Winemaker Katy Lovell has absolutely nailed it when it comes to making the ultimate romantic nectar.
On the back label of every bottle of Poetic Cellars wine, you will find a poem—and don’t poetry and romance go together like Napoleon and Josephine? I always find myself heaving a sigh when sipping the gorgeous wines of this winery, which is celebrating the one-year opening of its tasting room in Soquel.
Poetic Cellars was recently pouring at one of the splendid wine events put on by Capitola Book Café—the very place to drink wine and listen to a poetry reading. Lovell was there with her partner Joseph Naegele—the poet who supplies us with a beautiful poem on every label of Poetic Cellars’ wine. His readings were wonderful—and I felt a sweet euphoria tasting excellent wines whilst listening to very voluptuous verses.
Whole Foods had donated a beautiful array of food for that evening—and as Naegele announced each wine to be tasted, we were asked to get a plate of hors d’oeuvres that paired with it. Although I loved all the wines, I was particularly smitten with the 2005 Petite Sirah ($26), San Francisco Bay – an absolutely gorgeous full-bodied red with huge flavors of dark, dark fruits. Densely flavored with chocolate, lots of ripe plums and blackberries, this voluptuous Sirah thoroughly deserves the bronze medal it won a couple of years ago at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition.
Wine, Poetry and Chocolate: Poetic Cellars has put together a seductive treat for Valentine’s weekend—Feb. 13 and 14 from noon to 5 p.m. Lovell has selected five of her favorite wines and paired them with five decadent chocolate treats. Each wine features a wonderful romantic poem. The tasting fee for this event is $10.
