For those of you who’ve been anxious to hear any word on what DC has in store on the cinematic horizon past 2010, this past week was a godsend. “The Dark Knight” helmer Christopher Nolan finally broke his silence and talked everything from the status of Batman 3 to a potential approach to the Superman franchise (!?).
Here are some of the more revealing snippets from Nolan’s recent interview over at the L.A. times:
On Superman and the pitch offered to him by Batman story collaborator David Goyer:
“A lot of people have approached Superman in a lot of different ways. I only know the way that has worked for us that’s what I know how to do.”
“He (Goyer) basically told me, ‘I have this thought about how you would approach Superman. I immediately got it, loved it and thought: That is a way of approaching the story I’ve never seen before that makes it incredibly exciting. I wanted to get Emma (Nolan’s Wife and producing partner) and I involved in shepherding the project right away and getting it to the studio and getting it going in an exciting way.”
As an apologist for Bryan Singer’s slight misfire back in 2007 with “Superman Returns” (Yeah, I kinda like it), it’s a little frustrating that a reboot means Brandon Routh won’t be back in the tights (he was truly beyond perfect casting in my mind). But hey, that also means no Kate Bosworth as Lois Lane! I’ll take it.
On his third (and final?) visit to Gotham City with Batman 3:
“My brother (Jonathan, who wrote the screenplays for Nolan’s DK as well as The Prestige) is writing a script for me and we’ll wait to see how it turns out…. He’s struggling to put it together into the epic story that you want it to be.”
“Without getting into specifics, the key thing that makes the third film a great possibility for us is that we want to finish our story, and in viewing it as the finishing of a story rather than infinitely blowing up the balloon and expanding the story.”
Well, the guy certainly has his work cut out for him what with “The Dark Knight” sitting pretty as the 3rd highest grossing box office film of all time as well as scoring Heath Ledger’s Oscar-winning crack at the clown prince. I mean, seriously. How are you gonna top that, man? What villain could you possibly use?
“It won’t be Mr. Freeze.”
Whew. It’s nice to know he’s on the right track.
