Plus Letters to Good Times

The Giants did it! After 56 years … a World Series Win. Kudos to the Bay Area team, which generated so much excitement during the last few weeks, you couldn’t really walk down the streets without hearing the occasional loud cheers blasting out of local bars. Whew. A job well done, indeed.

And then … there’s the election results. Thoughts? Send them to us at le*****@gt******.com . We want your input. And so … another new cycle begins.

Time, the passing of time, and things that leave an indelible imprint are, in fact, the theme of this week’s cover story, in which a few GT scribes expound upon the significance of the late Morton Marcus. The revered local and esteemed poet passed away a year ago. His words, his visions, his longtime creative contributions to the area are still being felt. And, fittingly, there’s now an annual memorial event that pays tribute to the poet, to poetry and to creativity—and, really, so much more. Learn more about all this beginning on. Godspeed Mort … (wherever your spirit is soaring).

Creativity is the subject of another feature this week in A&E, where writer Duffie Bart explores the signicance of local Coeleen Kiebert’s works. Colbert, an excceptional artist, created a book on the subject of creativity, and her ideas are rather illuminating.

In between all this, the season of reflection has arrived, and so, in November, we begin taking stock of the year, all the good that’s arrived—at least, we try to— and how we want to move ahead in 2011. In a day and age when we seem more busy than ever, I invite all readers to take five minutes to … put down the cell phones, stop watchng TV for a moment, and look around you. Better yet … take a good look into the eyes of those you are most grateful for and then do this: Tell them.

It may not be as dramatic as TV, but the effects may last longer.

Inspiration Speaks
I work for a company called Employment and Community Options which is a day program serving adults with developmental disabilities. Each week I teach a class on Reading, Writing and Discussion where we read several articles from Good Times, discuss the main points in the articles, and then write an article based on the same theme. This week, one of the articles the class decided to read was the “Local Talk” section and they were immediately inspired to write their own list of good advice. The class wanted me to pass their ideas on to you and your readers.

Giving Good Advice

Here are some good tips for guiding
you in life:
• Don’t take things too seriously.
• Don’t try to rush things; always have patience in your life. Being impatient won’t solve your problems.
• Respect other people.
• Don’t steal money or anything else
• Have a lot of friends around you.
• Be nice to people and don’t be so bossy to them; try not to control other people and their actions.
• If you want to stay healthy, drink a lot of teas and water.
• Always contact your friends and family and always take the time to spend with them because we don’t know if they’ll be here forever.
• If you want to be healthy, get exercise and stay fit.
• Keep your brain and your mind active.
• Remember to breathe.
• Get a lot of rest; don’t stay up and party so much.
• Always take pride in what you do.

Voting Season Roundup
I was happy to see the coverage you gave for the elections—great job, especially with the Santa Cruz city council candidates. One thought: More. I would have appreciated even more coverage of what’s up and what’s happening. Think about it because I think readers would value it.

Hot on H20
Interesting piece on the water issues (10/21) and it was good to hear that many of the city candidates seem to be seeing a broader vision of any water plan here in Santa Cruz, and the county, really. Conservation is a must and the whole desal issue should really be plunged into because that whole thing is nuts. It was nice to hear Lynn Robinson, David Terrazas, Ron Pomerantz and others talk about ideas and possibilities. But let’s see what happens after the elections. Actions speak louder than words.

On ’KZSC’ ...
Cool… about KZSC being ranked as one the best college stations on the Huffington Post. Loved reading this part: “As qualification for its fifth place ranking, Huffington Post cited that Radio-Locator, an online radio monitoring site, listed KZSC as the most listened to college station, ahead of college stations in much larger cities like Seattle and New York.” We’re as good as New York, people!
