.9-to-5 Workers Take Note

Santa Cruz Mayor Ryan Coonerty, who began the one-year term last month, has set new city council meeting rules in place to “increase efficiency” of the meetings. As part of these changes, the public comment portion of the meetings, which occur two Tuesdays a month at council chambers at City Hall, has been moved from the start of the meeting (3 p.m.) to 5:30 p.m., when it will last for no more than 30 minutes and each speaker will have a strict limit of two minutes to get their point across. Coonerty says this move will help involve residents who work until 5 p.m., giving them the chance to participate in the 5:30 comment period. And if you still can’t make it, emails to the council will be accepted during the meeting.
