… Could still get thrown away. But this Valentine’s Day, a quartet of local organizations and businesses will be giving discarded food-grade, kosher roses a second life—possibly in your garden. Originally destined to become tea, the unwanted rose petals were narrowly rescued from becoming trash by Terra Nova Ecological Landscaping, which refashioned them into garden bed mulch. The rose petal mulch will be the grand prize given at a Monday, Feb. 14 raffle at Greenspace, where local surf star Darryl Virostko will draw the winning ticket. Virostko will be using the Valentine’s Day event to raise awareness about addiction recovery. All proceeds from the raffle will benefit Transition Santa Cruz. The raffle will take place at noon at Greenspace, 1122 Soquel Ave., Santa Cruz, 423-7200. Raffle tickets will be sold for $3 and purchased in advance at Greenspace or by calling Ken Foster of Terra Nova at 359-5717.
