.Delicato Family Vineyards

Every now and then, I write about a very inexpensive wine that deserves a bit of attention. In this case, it’s Delicato Family Vineyards’ 2009 Merlot, which sells for around $6. Actually, I saw it in New Leaf for a bit less than this, so if you’re looking for a nice red that’s not going to break the bank, then you really can’t go wrong.

At a recent concert at The Catalyst, my husband bought a bottle of Delicato to while away the evening – as we got there early to nab a precious table and a couple of chairs.

The featured act, Trombone Shorty, didn’t come on until close to 9:45 p.m., so we were happy to imbibe on the Delicato in the meantime and listen to the opening group.

Delicato Family Vineyards was founded in 1924 by the Indelicato family to produce wine in the Italian style, and the family continues to make wine going into its third generation, but just a lot more of it. It’s one of the nation’s biggest wineries, producing one million cases a year. Since those very early days, their goal has always been to grow the finest grapes and create premium wine at affordable prices. And the fact that Delicato has won the U.S. Winemaker of the Year award three times at the International Wine & Spirits Competition is proof of the pudding.

The Merlot reveals a rich fruitiness, plus there’s a hint of chocolate, black cherries and plum as well. With its aromas of spice, berries and rose petals, this is really an excellent buy for its price point. It would easily pair with a pork roast or a plate of pasta – or it’s good just on its own whilst listening to some jazzy trombone.

Staff of Life

I checked out the brand new Staff of Life store on opening day and talked to the wine buyer. Although the shelves in the wine department were not fully stocked at that time, he assures me that they will carry an abundance of local wines. Meantime, the store is beautiful and impressive–and piled high with healthy things to eat and drink.
