.Tsunami Cancels Youth Symposium

Last week, Good Times ran a story about the March 11 Nadherny-Calciano Youth Symposium, the 13th annual event that would draw speakers and experts from around the country to speak about issues facing teenagers. Because of the 9.0 earthquake in Japan, and the resulting tsunami warnings on California’s coast, the symposium organizers first heard rumors of road closure near the event venue, the Cocoanut Grove at the Beach Boardwalk, around 6 a.m. By 8 a.m., they learned of extended road closures pending the possibility of a tsunami. The symposium, which was to have 500 attendees, was cancelled by the Santa Cruz Police Department because of safety issues. The 2011 event will not be rescheduled, but full refunds for registration fees are available, and the speeches from the keynote speakers will be broadcast on Community TV in the near future. Check calcianoyouthsymposium.org for updates and more information.
