Tuesdays are great days to visit Watsonville. That’s when the new La Buena Taqueria and More serves $1 tacos all day. And while the menu brochure lists just four popular fillings, a poster on the counter offers almost four times as many, and the taqueria uses local, seasonal ingredients in its family recipes
I opted for my favorite, Carne Asada. Two soft four-inch corn tortillas were topped with minced beef, piquant white onions, tomatoes and cilantro with a spoonful of bright, nicely fiery salsa. I added a bit more salsa fresca from the salsa bar for a very satisfying snack.
A six-inch flour tortilla topped with a bit of cheese was griddled and folded to make a “small” quesadilla ($3). It contained crunchy, spicy al pastor barbecued pork, slices of tomato and avocado and shredded lettuce. It was a very nice use of chilies.
If you’d prefer Best Foods mayonnaise or dill pickles on your burritos ($4.75 to $5.25), it’s not a problem at La Buena. They also offer certified Angus beef char-grilled quarter-pound ($3.75) and third-pound ($4.75) Hamburguesas with all the trimmings in the condiment bar. Veggie, chicken and salmon burgers are also available.
Also bun-ready are gourmet Corralitos Sausages ($6.50) and hot links ($4.75). Corn dogs ($2), and hot dogs ($2.50) are ideal for the little ones not quite ready for tangy Mexican flavors. And La Buena has sweet potato fries.
But if you can’t make it to Watsonville until a Fiesta Wednesday, fountain drinks are free with any order. | KP
