Sauvignon Blanc 2010—and Johnny’s Harborside Restaurant
Skov Winery is a fairly new kid on the block. But it’s certainly not new in the wine biz. Formerly called Roudon-Smith Winery, owners Annette and David Hunt decided on a complete turnaround, sold off the old winery and brought in a whole new label with a very different look. The Skov label reflects Annette’s Danish background—Skov is Danish for forest and it just so happens that their winery on Bean Creek Road in Scotts Valley is surrounded by redwoods. It also fits hand in glove with the whole Santa Cruz image—more redwoods in a heavily forested area.
And so it is with great pleasure that I introduce you to Skov Winery—if you don’t know it already—and their crisp and delightful Sauvignon Blanc 2010, Lake County. And it was with pleasure that we shared this bottle of wine with friends visiting from the South of France at Johnny’s Harborside Restaurant.
This Sauvignon Blanc goes perfectly with seafood. Served chilled, it’s a great accompaniment to Johnny’s delicious seafood offerings. Arriving early in time for Happy Hour at Johnny’s, we watched the sun set over the harbor whilst enjoying some crispy calamari as an appetizer and some half price drinks. For main courses my friend and I ordered fresh crab (not to waste a minute of the crab season) and our husbands ordered fish and chips.
We opened up the wine to let it breathe a bit and took our first sips when our main courses arrived. It’s hard to believe that this wine clocks in at only $10 a bottle. Refreshing and crisp with a nice cream soda bouquet it’s a lovely wine to pair with many kinds of food—especially fish.
Skov Winery’s other wines include Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Zinfandel. It’s a lovely winery to visit and you are welcome to take a picnic and enjoy the bucolic setting.

Wine Events
Skov is doing a Valen-Tasting for all you Valentines out there on Saturday, Feb. 11 from noon to 4:30 p.m.—and featuring chocolates from local chocolatiers. The tasting fee is $10 and $5 for wine club members.
Skov is also participating in Wine Wednesdays at Shadowbrook and is the featured winery on Feb. 15 from 5-8 p.m. And mark your calendars for St. Patrick’s Day at Skov Winery when they kiss the Blarney Stone with an Irish Wine & Cheese Tasting —from noon to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 17.
