Hamadi Organic’s tagline, “Tested on Actresses, Never on Animals,” says two important things about the hair care line off the bat: one, it’s ethical and, two, it’s good enough for the stars. Indeed, the likes of Scarlett Johansson, James Franco and Eva Mendes rely on Hamadi creator Jamal Hammadi to tame and style their tresses with his eco-friendly concoctions. (And, yes, the creator’s name has two m’s and the company’s name only has one.)
My switch to all natural, “green” hair, skin and body products several years ago further complicated my chronically unsuccessful quest for the perfect hair product. The offerings at local health food stores just don’t cut it for my wild, thick, curly blonde locks. Hamadi, on the other hand, is eco-friendly, natural and can contend with the high-end conventional brands when it comes to effectiveness. My experience with the products can be summed up in the words of actress Drew Barrymore, who said the Hamadi line “single-handedly brought her hair back to life.”
Each item is a mixture of 100 percent organic essential oils and plant extracts. But what isn’t included in Hamadi products is as exciting as what is: they are completely free of artificial ingredients, parabens, perfumes and dyes, and are vegan-friendly.
Take note: Hamadi products should be carefully selected by hair type and need, not just used at random. The Hamadi Usage Chart helps with this, providing products and tips by hair type. Of the products thoughtfully chosen for me by Jamal and his team, here are the ones I recommend the most:
*Ginger Soymilk Hair Wash (for all hair types): This pro shampoo has a subtle, soothing smell and makes my hair squeaky clean without drying it. According to the product description, “soymilk seals in moisture and proteins.”
*Shea Leave-In (for all hair types): My hair soaks this leave-in conditioner right up. It calms the frizz, nurtures my hair, and works as a styling product, too. When I’m in a curly sort of mood, I use the leave in on my damp hair and twist it into sections. As my mane dries, I undo the twists and voila: bouncy, smooth curls. When it’s more relaxed waves I’m after, I brush out my hair with the amazing natural wood Hamadi hair brush (also highly recommended) with a dollop of leave in and watch as my hair becomes velvety waves.
*Shea Hair Mask (for dry, damaged hair): “The ultimate replenishing treatment,” says the company. I’d have to agree. My favorite way to utilize this hydrating mask is to put it on when my hair is damp and then do a French braid. It can be washed out or left in—either way, it works miracles.
