All right. I’m sure to catch hell for this, but I have to be honest: I can’t stand Joss Whedon. I never got into Buffy, Angel, Firefly, Serenity, or ANY of that s…tuff (O.K. his run on the X-Men comic isn’t bad). I don’t know if I’m still bitter over his horrendous screenplay for Alien: Resurrection (I am) or what, but I am deeply bummed about the recent announcement that he is set to helm Marvel’s Avengers movie.

It’s odd because back when the guy was attached to pen and shoot the Wonder Woman flick that never came to be it felt like a good fit. Here was a writer who seemed to be capable of creating a strong female character and to me, they don’t come any tougher than Donna Troy. That was really too bad that it didn’t work out. So why then do I care at all about an Avenger’s movie when I don’t even read the comic book?
Because I’m a nerd and complaining is in my blood.
The Avengers has so much going for it that I can’t help but root on it’s success. If this goes on to be as massive as it’s truly capable of being, you better believe the door over at Warner Bros. is gonna swing wide open for that Justice League movie to shoot out of development hell and blow my DC fanboy little mind. I mean, come on – Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man, Chris Evan’s Captain America, potentially Edward Norton’s Hulk as well as frickin’ THOR all in one epic live action movie? Yes please.
In my mind Whedon is still totally untested in that last area. Yeah, he can write and shoot capable television work, but Serenity, from what I saw came nowhere near the grand scale that a movie showcasing a dream team of superheros like the Avengers demands to be. Let’s hope I’m wrong.
Anyway, here’s the weekly pull for the comic shops and be sure to swing by a movie theater when you get a chance. The ridiculously fun adaptation of Mark Millar and John Romita Jr’s ultraviolent comic series Kick Ass! finally hit the screens this past weekend and easily earns its admission cost for Hit Girl alone. Not to be missed.
