Win tickets to see Gesaffelstein at The Catalyst on SantaCruz.com
You may know Gesaffelstein, aka Paris-based DJ/producer Mike Levy, from his collaborations with Kanye West on the rapper’s 2013 album Yeezus. Or maybe you know him for connecting hard techno to its industrial roots in bands such as Front 242 and Nitzer Ebb. But did you know where he got his name? It’s a mashup of Gesamtkunstwerk, the German ideal of universal artwork that combines numerous disciplines into a single vision, and Albert Einstein. “Gesaffelstein is an ambitious name,” Levy has said. “I want my music to be art, with something to say, but Einstein is about quantum physics, too. That means the small things, the tiny things that change everything, the detail.”
