Who’s the best in your book? Maybe it’s time you tell us. Yes, it’s that time of year again—where you, the reader, have an opportunity to vote for your favorite people, places, businesses and more. It’s all at your fingertips—literally—in the Best Of Santa Cruz County Readers Poll online. It’s already our biggest voter turnout to date, so be sure to log on and get voting. There is something in it for you, of course—other than cheering on your favorites. GT is giving away some prizes in the process too. A handful of online voters will be picked from a random draw and to win movie tickets or dinners-for-two at a local restaurant. Have fun with it all. And thanks for your votes.

Elsewhere, when it comes to health, sometimes all you need—or want—is a vote of confidence. The locals spotlighted in our annual Health Issue embody a certain confidence and spunk that is downright contagious. Learn why a popular cardio kickboxing instructor, a fitness and rehab maven, a vitamin enthusiast, an acupuncturist and a father and son committed to helping those with disabilities stand out. There’s more—check out the top health book picks this season, thanks to some local booksellers. (Check out Capitola Book Cafe’s picks exclusively online!)

So, dive in and see how you can make your 2010 even healthier. Actually, start by reading Danny Keith’s column where the local shares why giving is actually good for your health.

Consider doing some of that this week and see what happens.

More soon …

I enjoyed your article on commute alternatives (GT 2/4), but you left out an important alternative: telecommute centers. These are cropping up around the country, and we have a great one here in the county: The Satellite in Felton. I work there sometimes, and I’m always amazed at how much more I can get done at the Satellite than working at home. Not only is the space comfortable, but they are really focused on building community. We hold our meditation group meeting there, and since the local library has cut hours, they let our book club meet there, too. I know that the local Chamber, Valley Women’s Club and Mountain Community Resources also meet at the Satellite, so it’s become a real community center, as well as community workspace.

Thanks for some thoughtful reporting on commute solutions (GT 2/4). I found out more information than I thought I would. It’s got my whole household thinking, too, and we—there are six of us students—are opting to use a bike once a week to either go to work or to school. Let’s keep this world clean.

Housing Sucks
It was good to hear about the workshop about affordable housing (GT 2/4), but truthfully, housing here sucks. And it won’t get better either. I’m in my early thirties and I am just struggling to stay afloat. I have two jobs and I’m always tired and there’s never really any opportunity to save. I’m about ready to leave the town and start over completely—and most of it has to do with the housing situation. Landlords here are criminal. They should be ashamed of themselves for how much they charge.
