.Jeans + Leggings = Jeggings

blog_jeggings1Will this new fashion trend fly or flop in Santa Cruz?
If your mind is all befuddlement when you hear the word “jeggings,” don’t worry, you are not alone. This latest apparel craze, a hybrid between jeans and leggings (hence the clever moniker), has been made popular by the toothpick legged Hollywood set. Plastered across the pages of celeb gossip mags you will see glamorous jegging-clad starlets dashing to lunch on lettuce at The Ivy, dropping a few thousand dollars on a Rodeo Drive spree or simply taking out their garbage in the Hollywood Hills.

One would think that a denim legging could not possibly be comfortable—and forget about flattering! But surprisingly jeggings are both. These ingenious fabric creations are stretchy enough to do your downward dog in, yet are cleverly disguised with the attributes of real jeans (i.e. seams, whiskering and pockets) making even those of us with some junk in the trunk look suspiciously slender. Although a skinny movie star I am not, I decided to give jeggings a try. Though frighteningly difficult to get above your calves, once the jeggings had been successfully donned they were cozy and slenderizing with no muffin top in sight. You’ll see me wearing them around town with my favorite pair of knee-high boots or maybe a pair of flats—so versatile!

Many designer denim labels are cashing in on the jegging craze and turning out pairs for $150 and up. But happily as it turns out, hosiery brand Hue (found at Sock Shop Santa Cruz) makes a great pair for only $34, and these are the ones I purchased. When you get sad knowing that your jeggings must come off to go in the wash, you know you’ve reached the ultimate level of obsession.
