The ‘What-the-Bleeper’ shows the amazing union between water and thought
When it comes to H20, what you think about it matters, says water titan Masaru Emoto It came from the nether regions of somewhere else—that curious place or dimension that is difficult to describe. But there it was—an infinitesimal shiny purple heart on the beige carpet I was lying on during an early morning Bikram yoga class. Lovely, I thought. The titular icon of love had miraculously appeared before me. I used my index finger to pick it up. I kept the small heart-shaped spec there until an ever-increasing flow of perspiration down my arm forced me to offer it refuge. I placed the purple heart on the cap of my water bottle where, I thought in a state of Bikram bliss, it would filter something love-ish into the H20; something good I could drink in throughout the day. Three hours later, in my Pacific Avenue editing lair, I received news that Dr. Masaru Emoto was slated to discuss the nature of water, and our thoughts and emotions, in a Rio Theatre gig dubbed “Love Thyself.” Eyebrows curiously arched, I immediately inquired about an interview. (Coincidence, I have come to learn, is not coincidence after all.) Emoto, whose work was featured in last year’s hit indie film What the Bleep Do We Know?!, has a simple message: Water circulates the universe and if humans direct good conscious thought its way, the water’s energy will change—and so will its molecular structure. In fact, Emoto has shown in various studies that, when photographed with an uber microscope, water crystals that were the recipient to “positive” thought looked strikingly different than those on the receiving end of “negative” thought. The bottom line? Well, according to Emoto, we should all be thinking glorious things whenever we use water—drinking it, bathing with it, or admiring it. In other words, what you think, what you feel, matters. Don’t think Emoto passed up the obvious factoid: That humans—and the earth—are mostly made up of water. So, using his theory, the more good that humans can direct within—and out there—the better. Emoto, who was born in Yokohama in 1943, has a long history in the field of science. After graduating from Yokohama Municipal University studying in the Department of Humanities and Sciences, he eventually went on to establish I.H.M. Corporation in Tokyo. That was in the mid-80s. He nabbed a certification from the Open International University as a Doctor of Alternative Medicine in the early 90s, where he was introduced to “the concept of micro cluster water in the U.S. and Magnetic Resonance Analysis technology.” This is when his thirst to discover the mystery of water began. He started researching water around the planet, “not so much as a scientific researcher,” he says, “but as an original thinker, as a human being.” He came to realize that it was in the water crystal—water that has been crystallized, mostly via freezing—that water showed its true nature. Flashforward to the 21st century and Emoto is found traveling the world hosting three-day seminars on the subject, as well as being on the receiving end of accolades for his books, “The Hidden Messages in Water,” “The Secret Life of Water,” “Water Crystal Oracle,” “The True Power of Water” and “Love Thyself: The Hidden Messages in Water III.” The latter is the topic of discussion at a Gateways Books-sponsored event at the Rio on Saturday, April 15. As for the purple heart found in my Bikram yoga class, I taped it on the bottle—and retaped it to new water bottle cap—to remind me to drink (and think) in the love. (Can you feel it?) GT caught up with the globe-trotting Emoto for a quick interview. Soak it up:
Good Times: Some people here in America have missions or mission statements. Do you see yourself as somebody on a mission? And if so, what is your mission?
Masaru Emoto: My mission is, like Yoko Ono says, to tell people “We are all Water.”
GT: Do you bless or send consciousness to your own water each day? If so, how long have you been doing that?
ME: I don’t count how many or how long, but every time I drink, bath, use, and see the water, I do that.
GT: The popularity, success and achievements that have come from your work been quite positive. Did you ever imagine it would get to this level? How has it changed you?
ME: I have never thought I would become like this and I am kind of bewildered but I think everything is because of that film What the Bleep?!
GT: You are speaking all over the world. Mostly your ideas on water are being embraced. Do you find that there are some critics of your work?
ME: I have received some critics and I am still receiving them now. Most of the cases are from scientists and materialists. But I don’t think what they are claiming is wrong. My theory and research is not yet reached science and I should say it is more like fantasy. Therefore I hope they will fill up the gap between them.
GT: What is your most fascinating new discovery?
ME: “Vibration and Resonance,” which was taught through water, which is energy. And that I got the hint to get energy from water.
GT: When did you realize that you were really onto something with your studies?
ME: When I published the book, “Messages from Water,” and a lot of people have resonated with the book. Everybody’s recognition of it made it a phenomenon. But I think it was not my discovery but something everybody had resonated with subconsciously.
GT: You mention on your Web site—let us purify the water on the earth with love and thanks. Can you talk a bit about what people can do to achieve this? And how do you measure results? For instance, after sending “love and thanks” into a big body of water, do you study its molecular structure afterward?
ME: In an ideal world, it’s not like “Let’s pray for water in July,” but as I told you, it should be always be like this when you use water and drink water. By doing so, we could obviously affect water in positive ways and that is what I learned from my experience.
GT: Obviously, we are made up of water. Is it important to send ourselves thoughts of love and gratitude?
ME: Yes, that’s right. Let’s give love and gratitude to the water inside of your body.
GT: Can you explain in simple terms, perhaps, how it all works? We send thought to water and then …? And why is it important for people to do this?
ME: Only water can carry vibration, which is energy. That’s why Greek philosopher, Thales [the Milesian], said, “Water is the source of creation.” The vibration that the water has, is kept clean by sending words of love and gratitude, which create beautiful water crystals. We have a responsibility for that because we, human beings, are the only ones who can make and send vibrations.
GT: What was the best thing that came out of your recent trip to the Fourth World Water Forum in Mexico City? I understand the Crown Prince of Japan was there? What are his thoughts about your work?
ME: I had a time to give a talk to 100 children from all over the world about my work in the Children’s Water Forum, which was organized by UNESCO, and they really happily listened to my talk. That was the best thing I have experienced in the trip. And yes, His Imperial Highness, the Crown Prince, surely had come and given an excellent speech, but unfortunately, I could not meet with him in person. A few years ago, I asked the Queen Irene, who is a princess in The Netherlands and a big fan of my work, to hand out a copy of my book, “Messages from Water,” to the Crown Prince, who happened to come to The Netherlands for a wedding ceremony at that time, but I don’t know if the book was handed out to him. If he received my book, I would think he would be happy because my theory about resonance and vibration is just like the same meaning as “Yamato,” which was the original name of the country, Japan.
GT: You are President Emeritus of the International Water for Life Foundation Organization. Any recent insights from the work?
ME: The Emoto Project, which is an activity that we will give free copies of the children’s version of “Messages from Water” to children all over the world. This has been launched and we made the first sample book. I have announced that in the world forum and have started to distribute the books. There is a nonprofit foundation named “Water For Life,” which will support the project and has been launched in Oklahoma City and we would appreciate any support.
GT: Is there a “World Day of Love and Thanks to Water” this year? And what can people do on that day? What is the result you continue to hope for?
ME: I will be having a water ceremony in Lichtenstein on July 23 and another ceremony at Sea of Galilee in Israel on July 25. I hope people all over the world will pray for water together with us. What I hope for is, of course, world peace. So I will pray for water based on the world peace.
GT: You’ve traveled the world, seen many people. Is there one common thing you continue to see in the people of the world?
ME: Everybody loves water and the yardstick of beauty is the same. So, we should always look for mysterious beauty, as Albert Einstein said. I assume there will be the answers beyond that.
