Local nonprofit The Clean Oceans Project (TCOP) is working to convert plastic waste (the sort that clogs up our precious ocean waters) into liquid fuels, including gasoline, jet fuel and diesel. This plastic-to-fuel conversion will come in handy while the nonprofit executes their mission—to clean up plastic pollution from the oceans. Theoretically, they could then use the plastic waste they collect at sea to fuel their voyage home. The group has partnered with E-N-ergy, the U.S. Distributor for Japan-based Blest Company, which manufactures the portable plastic-to-fuel conversion units, to give demonstrations of this technology for the Santa Cruz community. Read about their latest demo in GT’s news blog, Fresh Dirt, at goodtimessantacruz.com. Learn more about TCOP at thecleanoceansproject.org.
