It may be the case that no one in California knows, loves or uses their local state parks quite like the residents of Santa Cruz County. Or at least this would explain why 67.68 percent of the county voted in favor of Proposition 21, the state park funding initiative, while it failed to pass at the statewide level. It would also explain why Santa Cruz, at almost 68 percent, had the highest approval threshold of any county in the state—more than San Francisco’s 63 percent, Marin’s 62 percent, Sonoma’s 56 percent, or any others. Statewide the proposition received only 41.9 percent “yes” votes. Friends of Santa Cruz State Parks issued a big Thank You to local voters on Nov. 3, and promised to continue the fight for keeping state parks alive and healthy.
