The Santa Cruz trio of lady troublemakers proves its TV show is still rad
As self-proclaimed ‘rad girls,’ they’ve gone where no Jackass has gone before. Ramona, Munchie and Darling Clementine, three former Santa Cruzans, are the stars of an all girls’ television show where they take on Johnny Knoxville-type stunts and slap the word ‘rad’ on them—things like getting maced, blending up a meal and chugging it down, and other woozy-inducing antics. The trio, who go by the aforementioned quirky pseudonyms, are currently watching their show, Rad Girls, play out its second season in rotation on the television network MavTV (which will soon be available to Comcast subscribers).
At 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 4, they will introduce the premiere episode of season two to local audiences at The Crepe Place in Santa Cruz. The women say the event is a way for audiences to see what they’ve been up to with the show, especially those fans that don’t have access to MavTV. In addition, season two will be coming out soon on DVD and will be available via amazon.com.
The women debuted the first season of their show in 2007 when they were residing in Santa Cruz and someone came up with the idea of a female, stunt-related reality show. Another network grabbed onto the concept and soon, Rad Girls was born. Now, a year later, they’re going even further.
Stunts in season two include some of the following: Ramona and Clementine beating each other up with various vegetables; Ramona fighting with a 12-year-old boxing prodigy; Clementine acting like a homeless secretary on the streets of Santa Cruz; and a real doozy—Munchie getting maced in the face on her birthday.
“I’m not usually the one who dives into the painful skits,” Munchie says. “It was the highest potency spray on the market. It was instantly like someone had blowtorched my eyes; excruciating pain. Mucous was flying out of my nose, and I was shaking, having an eyegasm. It was horrible pain but it was worth it. I can honestly say that I put myself in a situation of extreme discomfort but came out of it feeling stronger, like a newborn.”
Some people might think they’re absolutely nuts, others may find them a disgrace to feminism, and still others might view them as empowering leaders in the neo-feminist movement. But the girls themselves—what do they think?
“We truly started out to entertain ourselves,” Ramona says. “We just thought it was funny and … wanted to make ourselves and our friends laugh. I think a big part of what’s been inspiring about our project is that we had to confront those fears that a normal person may shy away from. We’re of the mindset, ‘Let’s do it.’”
Since the show’s humble beginnings in 2007, to having a photo of themselves on a billboard in Los Angeles as a promotional for the show, the Rad Girls has come a long way in a short time. All three of the women have (for the time being) relocated to Los Angeles—their new home. But, as will be evidenced on Feb. 4, these girls will always find Santa Cruz to be ‘rad.’
