Steve Caballero and his art show at The Abbey
Since the early 80’s Steve Caballero has been portraying his love of skateboarding through his contest results and video segments. The industry has rewarded him accordingly, Caballero was the first skater in history to get a signature pro deck in 1980 through Powell Peralta who has been distributing his pro model skateboards at a feverish rate. Steve was also the first skater in history to get a signature pro skate shoe with Van Shoes producing the Half Cab since 1989. He was also named “Skater of the Century” by Thrasher Magazine! Caballero broke into music in 1982-1985 with The Faction and then a series of other bands in order Odd Man Out, Shovelhead and Soda. Known for his skating, music, product endorsements and Christian influence on the people he comes in contact with, sometimes the incredible artistic ability that Caballero possesses is overlooked. Recently Cab reached out to discuss his upcoming art show at The Abbey on Highland St in Santa Cruz which happens to be one of his 1st solo showings. Steve was pretty hyped on the opportunity and was looking to get the word out so I called Sam Diggedy of The Morning Madhouse on KDON 102.5 and we brought Steve Caballero in studio to talk about skateboarding, sponsorships, life and of course the upcoming art show. (insert video here) The guest appearance on The Morning Madhouse was incredible, Steve opened up on his life around skateboarding and how fortunate he had been to maintain this level of success which enabled him to venture into the creative side of himself and his art. Steve had been producing art for quite sometime, and now he felt it was time to hold his 1st art show. Opening night at The Abbey, grabbed the family, Sam Diggedy and we mobbed over to check it out. I have to say it was nothing less that amazing, Caballero works in various mediums across various canvases with the obvious skateboard art, acrylics, glitter, India ink, oils, stencil and fabric combination.
Steve Caballero has lived the dream life, full of ups and downs but overall had managed to come out on top. Make sure you go by The Abbey to check out his art show, or follow Steve Caballero and his amazing life on his blog.
