This just In: Zack Snyder to Direct a Superman Reboot from a story by Christopher Nolan. In local news, Good Times comic book blogger passes out from excitement. Oh yeah, this is the big one. Now I love Superman. He’s easily my favorite comic book character of all time which means I will be the first to admit that Bryan Singer’s 2006 take on the iconic Kryptonian left much to be desired (despite the fact that Brandon Routh was outstanding in the lead role). So the news that the writing team behind “Batman Begins” and “The Dark Knight” is teaming up with the director of “300” and “Watchmen” to truly bring Kal-El into the 21st century has me chomping at the bit.
So exactly how did all of this come about?
Well, thank your old buddy writer David Goyer for coming up with a concept that made Chris Nolan all hot and bothered enough to shepherd development of the flick. According to the critically loved helmer of movies like “Memento” and this summer’s smash hit “Inception”:
“What it is, while David Goyer and myself were putting together the story for another Batman film a few years ago, you know thrashing out where we might move on from the Dark Knight, we got stuck. We were just sitting there idly chatting and he said ”by the way, I think know how you approach Superman”.. and he told me his take on it. I thought it was really tremendous. It was the first time I’ve been able to conceive of how you’d address Superman in a modern context I thought it was a really exciting idea. What you have to remember about Batman and Superman is that what makes them the best superhero characters there are, the most beloved after all this time, is the essence of who they were when they were created, when they were first developed. You can’t move too far away from that.”
Preach it, brother.
So what exactly drew them to decide on Snyder as director of the project? I have a few ideas. How about the fact that he’s already proven his box office clout and displayed over and over again that he loves a challenge? The guy’s cinematic debut was a re-make of George Romero’s much beloved “Dawn of the Dead” which didn’t suck (far from it, actually) and he proved that “Watchmen” was not only film-able but also capable of being a damn good movie (don’t agree? check out his extended cut with the animated “Tales from the Black Freighter” woven in and then we’ll talk). At the very least we can expect the movie to be gorgeous to look at but I have a feeling that whatever idea it is that these boys have come up with has a good chance of knocking the socks off of even the most hardened nerd.
So is there anything else that could possibly make this announcement more exciting? Oh right. There’s that confirmation that the movie’s villain is someone that just demands to be knelt before. Whoo boy, I need a nap.
