Following the debt ceiling increase debacle, how do you feel about the ability of the congress to conduct business effectively?
There is one reality that is certain—our divided government must compromise to move our nation forward. With the economy in such a fragile state and millions of Americans still looking for work, the stakes of not reaching sound compromise have never been higher.
I want to reaffirm that Democrats continue united on the need to get our economy moving. But unfortunately despite the story told by high unemployment rates and depressed economic indicators, Republicans continue to prioritize political gamesmanship over real legislation that gets people back to work.
As Republicans spent the summer driving our nation to the brink of default, American families were left to question why Congress was not working on what mattered most—creating jobs. In fact, after more than 200 days of being in charge, Republicans have failed to pass even one single jobs bill.
Instead they have opted to fight for protecting tax breaks for millionaires and billionaires and slashing investments in education and infrastructure. All while asking our nation’s most vulnerable to carry more of the burden. Surely, we can all agree that there is a better way forward.
Given the dire need across the nation, it is hard to understand why Republicans have decided to push a no jobs agenda. But after months of heated debate, I believe it is time we have fewer questions and more answers.
The current chop, squeeze and trim agenda will not give our nation what it needs. Because the truth is that when you provide less, you get less.
I hope that when Congress ends its recess, Republicans will return ready and willing to work with Democrats on legislation that creates jobs and supports our economy. Our country deserves nothing less.

Vocational Rehabilitation Specialist Inc. was just awarded a grant for homeless veterans. What will the grant do? And why is it necessary for us all to continue to support our veterans?
As a nation we have a fundamental duty to care for those that have bravely served our country in defense of our ideals and way of life. The hard work of Vocational Rehabilitation Specialist is playing a key role in ensuring veterans receive a helping hand.
Specifically, this grant in the amount of $200,000 will assist with job training aimed at helping veterans lead successful civilian careers. It fills me with pride to support their work, because I understand the urgent need that exists among homeless veterans.
Too many of our veterans are facing difficulties adjusting to civilian life after their military service. It is during these critical moments that we must step in and provide the help they need to lift themselves up and lead healthy and productive lives. As they have pledged to do for each other, we must never forget their service and dedication.
I am also encouraged that this local grant was part of a national effort led by President Barack Obama to strengthen our nation’s support of veterans. In all, the grants awarded nationwide will help more than 3,000 veterans access resources they so desperately need for themselves and their families.
