.UCSC Faces $31 Million in Budget Cuts

In a letter sent to UC Santa Cruz community on Feb. 7, Campus Provost Alison Galloway announced that Gov. Jerry Brown’s cuts to the UC budget would result in a $31 million cut for UCSC, about 6 percent of the total UC cut.  Because UCSC anticipated the cuts and adjusted the budget last year instead of using reserved funds, the actual loss in budget totals approximately $19 million.  In her letter, Galloway exhorted UCSC students and families to “envision a ‘new normal,’” and assured that UCSC will approach the budget cuts with the academic needs of students as their top priority.  “We face a monumental challenge as we seek to develop new ways of delivering services in an era of diminishing resources,” wrote Galloway.  In March, Chancellor George Blumenthal will present UCSC’s plan for the upcoming year in response to the budget cuts at the UC Regents meeting.  Until then, Blumenthal and Galloway will hold two town hall meetings to address concerns from the students and staff at UCSC.  The time and place for these town hall meetings has not yet been released.
